Rust-gill?

One mouldy mushroom on the log. These are from my visit to Kyoto in 2016. Probably one of the rust-gills - Gymnopilus, but I never did get a solid id.

Orange Birch Bolettes

Leccinum versipelle - orange birch bolette. Love the strange marbling that develops in the white flesh when it is sliced open.

Split Gill Fungus

Schizophyllum commune - split gill fungus on a silage sack

Split gill fungus is a very distinctive mushroom. It has a Y-shaped gill cross-section and a frilly, scalloped cap with a fuzzy texture. It grows all over the world in tropical and temperate climates. It is often  found growing flat to the surface of rotting logs, but here it is emerging in dense clusters from the side of  a black plastic silage bag.

Aniseed Cockleshell Fungus

Aniseed cockleshell fungus - Lentinellus cochleatus. Lentinellus species sport an unusual, jagged gill profile. This one grows a bit like a small oyster mushroom and smells of aniseed. Too bitter to be considered a good edible, though.

False Truffle Earthtongue

Tolypocladium capitatum - sprouting from a subterranean false truffle.

Elaphomyces granulatus is a truffle-like fungus that inhabits conifer plantations. It is rarely seen as it grows a few centimeters beneath the surface. It is parasitised by an earth tongue Tolypocladium capitatum that sprouts from the truffle and heads upwards, breaching the surface so it can deposit its spores on the wind.

A false truffle Elaphomyces granulatus revealed by digging down the stalks of the parasites.

Mouldy Ruby Bolettes

These are ruby bolettes - Hortiboletus rubellus. They seem to be emerging from the ground already coated in a thick layer of white mould.

Here's a photo taken at the same spot a few years ago, with less mould:

Loch Garten Foray

I had a wonderful hour nosing round the pine woods NW of Loch Garten near Aviemore yesterday. It's a long way from my usual haunts and the extensive woodland was supporting large populations of many new and unfamiliar fungi.

Cortinarius violaceus

Cortinarius armillatus

Leccinum cyaneobasileucum

Chroogomphus rutilus

Tapinella atrotomentosa

...and a few old favourites.

The miller - Clitopilus prunulus

Wooly milkcap - Lactarius torminosus

Orange birch bolette - Leccinum versipelle

New Zealand native Chanterelles

Cantharellus wellingtoniensis
Native to New Zealand's forests, Cantharellus wellingoniensis is smaller and paler, but still quite similar to the European Cantharellus cibarius.

Winter Polypore

Monday Mushroom #112

Winter Polypore - Polyporus brumalis

The winter polypore is one of the most mushroom-shaped of polypores. It quite often looks just like a regular, gilled mushroom until you look underneath and see the pores, or touch it: it's leathery in a way that very few gilled fungi are.

Powdery Piggyback

Monday Mushroom #98

The blackening russule - Russula nigricans is well named for the way it turns black on maturation, eventually degenerating into nondescript brittle black lumps that strongly resemble charcoal. It is a very common fungus round these parts and has developed parasitic hangers on - another fungus called the powdery piggyback fungus - Asterophora lycoperdoides - which emerges as little white mushrooms as the russule blackens.

These parasites are unusual in that their caps disintegrate into a brownish, spore bearing powder by a process totally unrelated to the development of spores on their gills.
