Tago's Brown Frog

Rana tagoi - Tago's brown frog - juvenile.

This is the tagogaeru- Tago's brown frog. Frequently found hopping about in the leaf litter of the forests around Kyoto.

Even more frequently, this frog is heard, but not seen - it is the source of the mysterious, subterranean croaking chorus often heard emanating from dank terraces and banks in the area.

February Frogs

Here's a few photos of the male frogs - Rana temporaria - hanging around by the breeding puddles on the forestry track behind my house. For most of the year they are pretty shy and difficult to photograph, but with spawning season in full swing, they have more important things to worry about than hiding from photographers!

Forest Frog

Wildife Wednesday #28

Forests are not generally fertile hunting grounds for reptiles and amphibians in Scotland. This far north, they tend to favour more open terrain - bogs and moors are usually good. However, here is an exceptionally dark frog being exceptional in an oak wood.
