Tree Fern Understory
Lovely tree-fern understory in an exotic conifer plantation, by a mill pond full of green and golden bell frogs. Whakarewarewa Forest, Rotorua, NZ.

Laminar Decay
Found this amazing piece of wood in the forest last sunday - it's not a fancepost - I think it's an incredibly delicately rotted larch tree.

Fallen Tree Lingers
I'd just like to show you a couple of photos I took of an alder tree that fell across a river near here. The first pic was taken just after it fell - May 2003:
The second was taken in February 2014:
I am amazed that a tree could hold on in a fast flowing burn like this for such a long time. Some of the beggest differences in the images are due more to the time of year, rather than the decade that separates the them. Hopefully I'll remember to revisit in May and get a clearer comparison...

Caledonian Pines
Tree-fetish Tuesday #47

Darranacorachs is a long abandoned farmstead deep in the spruce plantations. When I first encountered it (and painted this picture) there were still several buildings and some accompanying scots pines, but both the pines and the buildings have since been smothered in windthrown spruce trees.
A handful of venerable pines in Knoydart - John Muir Trust are nurturing a new generation of scots pines in the area.

Pines of Formby Sands
Tree-fetish Tuesday #42
Formby Sands to Ainsdale nature reserve was one of my favourite haunts when I lived in Liverpool. Great fungi and wildlife, and beautiful, varied landscapes. The pines in this plantation have been busy carpeting the shapely sand-dunes with needles and cones...
