I visited Kingley Vale nature reserve at the weekend. The place is very remarkable for its yew trees - there are very few yew forests left in europe - everywhere else yews hold on as single trees or small groups in forests composed primarily of other species.
I will upload some photos of the yews soon, but today I'm hilighting the eldritchifiying effect that yews seem to have on their surroundings - everything in the yew wood is dark and dank and contorted. For example these whitebeam trees - whitebeams are the quintessential suburban standard tree - with a clean, straight trunk and pleasingly regular rounded canopy. Just look what the yew forest did to them!

Staghorn Sumac

This is an exotic looking little tree, growing in gardens all over England. It originates from eastern north America. The fuzzy, red drupes have a taste rather like sherbet, and can be used to make a kind of pink lemonade.
They are also very useful for dyers - yielding several different pigments and a mordant as well.

Winter Weeping Ash

I am no lover of winter - all the insects and reptiles are dormant, the trees are bare as if dead. It is too cold to tarry out of doors and too dark to photograph most of what one sees. The mushrooms are over, camping can be fatal, heating bills are huge and the days are shorter than a decently long walk. I love the turning of the seasons, but would be happy with a winter half as long as those I experience here.

Carob

I love carob! The trees are shady, shapely evergreens dotted around in many mediterranean lands. The tree's fruits are large pods, reminiscent of giant runner beans.
As a food, it gets a bad reputation from being used as a chocolate substitute, but as an ingredient in its own right, carob can be wonderful - it is dark and bitter-sweet and can be used as a flavouring in both savoury dishes and desserts. Curries, bread making and muesli can certainly all be spiced up with the addition of a bit of carob powder.
